Happy Valentine's Day

When I do my dishes after not doing them regularly enough (I aspire to wash up my dishes after each meal...someday...), I like to organize them into groups first. I like to first divide flatware from plastics from ceramic dishes/pots and pans. From there, I separate out the cups, Tupperware, plates, bowls, pots/pans and cutting board/knives into 6 groups, for a total of 7 groups. Then I begin the washing/drying process.

I like to wash the items that dry the fastest first: the ceramic plates, then the ceramic bowls. Depending on how long its been, this will usually fill the dish drainer and so I'll take a washing break to dry what little moisture is left off of the ceramic dishes and put them away. Then I usually wash, dry, and put away the pots and pans (pots and pans may also come second to last depending on how many I have dirtied). Cups come next. I'm very particular about the cups so they take the longest.

If I have room, I'll put the Tupperware on top of the cups and maybe even fit the cutting board and knives in this dish drainer load. I often leave the plastics to dry on their own (or mostly...even when I leave them overnight, there still will be water on some of them...which must be dried before I put them away).

The last step is the flatware and other utensils. I always get a hand cramp when I wash the flatware even though I soak them first so anything tough to get off isn't tough to get off. If I load them all into the flatware spot in my dish drainer, the drainer will tip over because it is too heavy on one end. Because of this, if the flatware are done as a separate drainer load, I just lay them flat in the base of the drainer. I like to dry these right away so they don't get water spots.

You may be wondering what this has to do with Valentine's Day. I'm glad you made it this far to read why...

Last night, Nathaniel took me out for Valentine's Day. Pete and Jess lovingly agreed to baby-sit Abraham so we could go out. I was at the tail end of my "its-been-way-too-long-since-I've-done-the-dishes" process (I just had the flatware and utensils left) when Abraham decided then would be a good time to misbehave...meaning that I was tied up with correction and discipline in the last 30 minutes before Nathaniel came home (riding with Pete and Jess from downtown). I did not finish the dishes before our dear baby-sitters arrived!!

Not only did I not finish the dishes, but I only had time to lay out the food that they were to make for dinner...not make it for them as I had originally planned.

When we arrived home after a lovely time together for Valentine's Day, all the dishes from the dinner that I didn't make AND all of the flatware and utensils were washed and drying!!! :-)

Thank you Pete and Jess so much for giving me such a wonderful Valentine's Day gift! I love you guys!!! :-)

I used to do the same thing when I was younger! I would put off and put off doing the dishes until they were piled up all over and separate them all out. My mom didn't understand at all, but it made perfect sense to me!

Now that I live alone there is no need :-)
